Direct from the makers

Built to the same spec. Priced without the middle.

A $200 rain shell and a $55 rain shell are often sewn in the same industrial park, from adjacent rolls of the same laminate. We work direct with those makers and leave out the layers in between.

The gap between $200 and $55 is not manufacturing.

It is brand, retail overhead and dealer margin. VÅGSLAND buys directly from the manufacturers and leaves those layers out. That is the whole model, and there is no secret to it.

It also means delivery takes two to three weeks instead of two days. We would rather tell you that before you buy than after.

Why this exists

The most expensive piece of gear is the one that stops you going.

More people went outside last year than in any year on record. They also went less often than they used to. Those two facts sit oddly together until you price up a first kit.

I am not going to argue that good equipment should be cheap. I am going to argue about the part of the price that is not equipment — the brand, the shop floor, the dealer margin. We buy from the same factories, we test what turns up, and we leave that part out.

Everything on this site is a number we are willing to be held to. If one of them stops being true, tell us and we will change it.

Difference across a full kit

$1040

A first kit is the wall most people hit before they ever get outside. Lowering it is the entire reason this brand exists.

Our price is the current VÅGSLAND list price for the product named. The comparable figure is the median list price of the equivalent category across the 2026 tested fields at Switchback Travel and OutdoorGearLab — not the most expensive option, and not the cheapest. Sources and dates are on the How We Source page. Where we have not yet weighed or tested a production sample ourselves, the product page says so.

What happens before it reaches this page.

Set the floor, not the cheapest option.

Every product starts from a build target set at the credible floor for its category. A 5k/5k shell called waterproof gets destroyed in reviews, so we do not source one.

Test before we print a number.

Fill power, merino content and waterproof ratings are overstated across this industry as a matter of routine. We do not publish a figure until an independent test comes back — and if it comes back lower than the factory claimed, we publish the lower number.

Three samples, then an inspection.

We sample multiple suppliers per product and book third-party pre-shipment inspection before the balance payment clears. Claimed weights run light by about 15 percent, so we weigh everything ourselves.

Design with purpose.

Simple

Essential by design. Nothing unnecessary.

Durable

Built around materials and construction that can justify long-term use.

Honest

Clear about what we know, what we test, and what remains to be verified.
